Consent and communication: the adult skill nobody teaches

Good adult experiences, online or in person, all start the same way: clear communication. Here’s how to get better at it.

Consent is a clear, enthusiastic, ongoing “yes” from everyone involved. It can be withdrawn at any time, it applies to each new thing (yes to one thing isn’t yes to everything), and someone who is very drunk or pressured can’t give it.

Talk before, not during

The easiest time to talk about boundaries is before things get heated. Simple questions work best:

  • “What are you into?”
  • “Is there anything that’s off the table for you?”
  • “How do you like to be asked if something’s okay?”

Check in

A quick “Still good?” or “Do you like this?” keeps things going in the right direction and is never a mood killer. A hesitant or quiet answer means stop and talk.

Online counts too

Consent matters in chats and on camera as well:

  • Ask before sending intimate photos. Unsolicited ones are unwelcome, and illegal in some places.
  • Never share someone’s photos, videos or messages without permission.
  • Respect it when a performer, creator or match says no.

When someone says no

Say “thanks for telling me”, and move on. No arguing, no guilt. It makes people feel safe with you, which is the best thing you can do for any relationship.

Safer sex basics

Talk about protection and testing before you meet. Regular sexual health checks are a normal part of being an active adult; many clinics offer free, confidential testing.
