Adult dating apps: how to pick one and stay safe

Adult dating apps are built for people who want something casual: hookups, flings or no-strings dating, rather than a long-term relationship. They can be a great way to meet like-minded adults, as long as you know how they work and how to spot the fakes.

Mainstream apps vs adult apps

Mainstream dating apps are mostly about relationships, and explicit profiles are against their rules. Adult dating apps are upfront that members are looking for something casual, so there’s less guesswork, but also more fake profiles and paid “chat” features to be aware of.

Free vs paid

Most adult apps are free to join and browse. Paid memberships usually unlock messaging, seeing who liked you, and better filters. Before you pay:

  • Check whether you can message without paying, even a little.
  • Look for a monthly price, not just a “trial” that renews into something expensive.
  • Read the cancellation steps before you subscribe, not after.

Red flags

  • Profiles that are too perfect, with model-quality photos and no detail in the bio.
  • Instant messages from lots of attractive people the moment you sign up. These are often bots or paid chatters.
  • Requests to move to another app straight away, or for money, gift cards or crypto.
  • Links to “verify” yourself on another site. That’s almost always a scam.

A quick reverse image search on a suspicious photo often shows it’s been taken from someone else.

Protect your privacy

  • Use a username and a separate email address.
  • Don’t show your face in your first photo if you’re worried about being recognized.
  • Keep personal details (workplace, surname, address) out of your profile.
  • Don’t send intimate photos to someone you haven’t met; they can be shared or used for blackmail.

Meeting in person

Meet somewhere public first, tell a friend where you’ll be, and arrange your own transport. Talk about expectations and boundaries before you meet, and practice safer sex. If anything feels off, leave: you never owe anyone a meeting.
