Buying adult toys for the first time: a no-awkwardness guide

Adult toys are a normal part of a healthy sex life for millions of people, solo or with a partner. Buying your first one can feel awkward, but a few simple rules make it easy.

1. Choose body-safe materials

This matters more than anything else.

Material Notes
Medical-grade silicone The best all-rounder: non-porous, easy to clean, lasts for years.
Glass and stainless steel Non-porous and very hygienic. Can be warmed or cooled.
ABS plastic Hard, body-safe and common in vibrators.
“Jelly”, PVC, TPE/TPR Porous and harder to keep clean. Best avoided, especially if they smell strongly of chemicals.

2. Start simple

For a first purchase, a small, simple, rechargeable toy is usually the best choice. Big feature lists matter less than good materials and a comfortable size.

3. Use the right lubricant

Water-based lube works with everything. Don’t use silicone lube with silicone toys, as it can damage the surface.

4. Buy from a reputable shop

Established shops list materials clearly, ship in plain packaging, and bill under a neutral name. Check the returns policy too: for hygiene reasons, opened toys usually can’t be returned.

5. Clean and store properly

Wash toys before and after each use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner (follow the maker’s instructions for anything with a motor). Let them dry fully, and store them separately in a pouch so materials don’t react with each other.

Bringing a partner in
